WASHINGTON ISLAND
Washington Island is accessed by passenger or car ferry. The island has lots to see so some type of transportation is necessary. Whether you choose to travel around the island by car, bike, moped or the Cherry Train (highly recommended for the first time island explorer) you will find an abundance of island flavor. Pick up your island map at the ferry dock. Your transportation choices to the island are the Island Clipper, leaving from Gills Rock or the Washington Island Ferry, departing from Northport Pier.
While the journey to the Island is an adventure in itself the real fun begins when you arrive. Both ferry lines have great maps of the Island that show the location of the following cultural and culinary attractions:

Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum View artifacts, photographs and videos on local maritime history including commercial fishing, Coast Guard and area shipwrecks. Special programs available during the open season. Open 10:00-4:00 weekends starting Memorial Day weekend, through Columbus Day weekend.

TOP OF THE THUMB - GILLS ROCK & ELLISON BAY
The Door County Maritime Museum and Lighthouse Preservation Society - Gills Rock provides a glimpse into the rich nautical heritage of the area. The newly remodeled facility features the fishing tug Hope built in 1930 by Sturgeon Bay Boat Works (currently Palmer Johnson). Visitors can board the boat and view its last fishing trip in 1992. Along with the Hope is the remake of a net shed complete with fishing boxes, a net reel, and other traditional fishing supplies. The Museum also features new exhibits on shipwrecks and lifesaving including a lyle gun used to rescue mariners from shipwrecks. The Clearing is a "folk school" located on a high bluff overlooking the waters of Green Bay in Door County, Wisconsin. The Clearing's natural setting, secluded cluster of historic buildings of wood and stone, and program topics are conducive to clearing one's mind and coming to a better understanding of nature and one's own place in the world. Simplicity, artistic surroundings, small classes, and excellent teachers combine to foster learning in a cooperative, family-like atmosphere. The Clearing emanates a "mystique" that is not easily described, but is evident in the enthusiasm of its participants and alumni. Ellison Bay Pottery, located at 12156 Garrett Bay Road; owner, John Dietrich bought Driftwood Farms (10 acres of apple and cherry trees, an apple packing barn and outbuildings) in 1974 and transformed it into Ellison Bay Pottery. The apple packing barn also stored apples and cherries and housed chickens. here was an office, a garage, bare walls and electricity in that barn. The water came from a faucet in the basement and the plumbing, well, there wasn't any. A four holer was operational then. After many years of remodeling, the studio, the gallery and finally the living quarters, John and his wife Diane have an established business in a thriving tourist area which is well known for its natural beauty, visual and performing arts and hospitality. Gills Rock Stoneware is located in an historic building in Ellison Bay. The carefully restored former hotel/saloon provides the perfect the perfect backdrop for the work of potters Larry {Thor} and Judy Thoreson and their talented staff. The work is primarily functional but with a strong emphasis on form. Highly imaginative and original decorations enhance the strong sculptural shapes resulting in pottery that is as pleasant to live with as it is to use. Along with the pottery they produce, many other crafts ranging from handmade pewter to woodwork to beautiful table linens may be found at GRS. Silver Poplar Studios feature Fine Arts by Jim Maronek in an eclectic barn amid country gardens on a Russian estate. Established as a rustic artists' retreat in 1929, SILVER POPLAR STUDIOS LLC includes a gallery featuring work in the many styles and media of its resident artist Jim Maronek. Clay Bay Pottery, opened in 1976, it has evolved into one of the galleries not to miss when visiting Door County, located 2 miles north of Sister Bay on Hwy 42. Pipka's Gallery, 334 Mill Road. Pipka was born in Slovakia and raised in Germany. In 1949, during World War II, her family emigrated to an idyllic small town in North Dakota. Annual return trips to Germany to visit family kept the Old World customs and traditions alive and dear to her heart. This inspiration and her natural artistic talent led Pipka to explore the Bavarian painting known as Bauernmalerei, "Peasant Painting." One snowy winter day in her studio, Pipka was inspired to design and paint an old world Santa as a gift for her mother. This fueled a deeper fascination with Santa and all things Christmas. Ephraim Foundation, locations throughout Ephraim. Ephraim's historic places include the site of the first landing by Pastor Iverson in 1853, the site of the first Moravian Church (1858), the Pioneer Schoolhouse (1880), the Anderson store and dock warehouse, as well as the Anderson Barn and eight homes more than a century old. Anderson's Store and Dock have been depicted over and over by artists and photographed by thousands. The dock building originally served as a warehouse for the store; later it held fish, orchard crops, lumber and farm products for shipment by boat. Much later it was Ephraim's first improvised movie theater, with viewers sitting on planks supported by kegs found in the warehouse. Today the warehouse siding is completely carved and painted with the names of boaters who have docked there. Cana Island Lighthouse/Door County Maritime Museum & Lighthouse Preservation Society, located north of Baileys Harbor, off County Q at the end of Cana Island Road (watch closely for the signs). Yes, it is possible to stroll to an island. Cana Island, with its historic lighthouse facilities, is open to the public seven days a week from 10 am to 5 pm from May 5, 2006 through October 29, 2006. Walk across the rock causeway from the Door County mainland to the island. Step inside the keeper's house where, beginning in 1869, the first of a number of lighthouse keepers tended to the light which guided sailors and protected them from the dangerous shoals extending out from the island into Lake Michigan. The Ridges Sanctuary, County Q, turn right on Cty Q at north edge of Baileys Harbor, then first right. The Ridges Sanctuary is a 1,400 acre pristine natural area located in Door County, Wisconsin.
